I-361 was one of the Type D1 class submarines ("Sen'yu" or "Yusosen"). Launched at the end of 1943, it served in the Imperial Japanese Navy until mid-1945. Its main task was to conduct supply transport missions to remote Pacific islands, and at the end of the war it was converted into a carrier for Kaiten suicide mini-submarines. I-361 was sunk by the American submarine USS Hake in June 1945.

I-171 belonged to the Kaidai Type 6B class. It was active from the beginning of the Pacific war, carrying out patrol missions and taking part in offensive actions against Allied fleets and shipping. It is best known for sinking the American transport ship USS Warrington during the Gilbert Islands campaign. I-171 was sunk by American destroyers in 1944 near the Admiralty Islands.
