Historical background and use of the T-34/85 D-5T tank

The T-34/85 tank is an upgraded version of the legendary T-34, introduced during the heaviest fighting on the Eastern Front in World War II. The version with the D-5T gun, produced mainly at the turn of 1943/1944 in the Uralmash and Plant No. 112 facilities (“Krasnoe Sormovo” – Gorky), was a response to the appearance of the German Tiger and Panther tanks. These tanks participated, among others, in Operation “Bagration” in 1944, contributing to the Soviet breakthrough on the Eastern Front. They served in the Red Army until the end of the war and later also in the allied armies of the Warsaw Pact.
