English Electric (BAC) Lightning is a twin-engine supersonic interceptor fighter, which was in service with the British RAF from 1960 to 1988. It was one of the fastest aircraft of its era, capable of exceeding Mach 2, and had an outstanding climb rate. The Lightning formed the backbone of Britain’s air defense during the peak of the Cold War, guarding the UK’s airspace against possible attacks from the USSR. It served exclusively in the RAF and for a short period in the air forces of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

The F.1A and F.2 versions are distinguished by their characteristic twin-tail configuration and sleek silhouette, featuring numerous aerodynamic refinements and state-of-the-art avionics for their time. The Lightning took part in numerous patrol missions over Western Europe, mostly in the period from 1960–1980.
