The F-8E Crusader was designed and produced by the American company Chance Vought (later Vought) as a carrier-based supersonic fighter, mainly intended for the US Navy and US Marine Corps. The prototype first flew in 1955, and mass production began in 1957. The aircraft was used extensively during the second half of the 1950s, the 1960s, and the Vietnam War ("Cold War"). The RF-8 Crusader ultimately ended its service with the French Air Force only in 1999.
